When we recommend HDZ — and when we don't
Recommend
Best for: Most Denver homes
Suburban single-family in any ZIP with average hail exposure, standard pitch, no insurance-discount goal.
Suggest alternative
Best for: High-hail ZIPs and insurance-discount seekers
For ZIPs hit twice or more by 2"+ hail in the last 5 years, we suggest CertainTeed Landmark IR (Class 4) for the upgraded impact rating and documented premium discount.
What homeowners ask about HDZ
- Is HDZ "Class 4"?
- No — HDZ is Class 3. GAF makes a Class-4 shingle called Timberline AS II, but it costs more and has fewer color options. For most Denver roofs the Class 3 rating is adequate; for high-hail ZIPs we suggest a true Class 4 product.
- How long will HDZ last on a Denver roof?
- 20–25 years assuming no major hail event during that window. Major hail can cut that in half. The Golden Pledge warranty covers 50 years against manufacturing defects but does not cover hail.
- Can I get the Golden Pledge warranty from any roofer?
- No — Golden Pledge requires a GAF Master Elite contractor (top 2% of GAF installers nationwide). We are Master Elite certified in Colorado.
